Also, British people are ‘very warm’ and ‘friendly’. It was a really wonderful experience for me. In Mumbai, we hardly get so much open place and fresh air to exercise. So it eased me a lot for the bikini shoot. “We hope that this film is a blockbuster and encourages all the Indian travellers to come relive their Bollywood memories in Britain”, said VisitBritain’s Regional Manager for Asia Pacific & Middle East.įor more information about the Yorkshire filming locations featured in ‘Shaandaar’, take a look at this interactive map:Īlia, who was present at the launch of Visit Britain’s Bollywood Britain – Shaandaar campaign said, “The scenic beauty of the locations, where we filmed, made me do more jogging, exercising in fresh air. VisitBritain, along with Turkish Airlines, had launched the Bollywood Britain – Shaandaar campaign, to promote destination Britain and the locations where the film has been shot extensively.

Turkish Airlines & Visit Britain Launched ‘Bollywood Britain – Shaandaar’ Campaign ‘Shaandaar’ was directed by Vikas Bahl, who had earlier directed the successful movie ‘Queen’ (starring Kangana Ranaut).

The film’s director (and cinematographer) did a great job of capturing the rich and varied landscape Yorkshire on screen. Just checkout the beautiful UK locations that were captured in Shaandaar. Yorkshire, watch-out for lots of Indian tourists this summer! In the movie you get to see, popular Yorkshire locations such as Allerton Castle near Harrogate, Skipton’s Broughton Hall, Eddsfield Airfield in Driffield and Low Force Waterfall near Barnard Castle, County Durham, Goathland railway station in North Yorkshire, the beach at Saltburn-by-the-sea, the gardens and farm at Temple Newsam in West Yorkshire and Leeds’ Grand Theatre and Opera House. The main base and the most notable location of the film was Carlton Towers in North Yorkshire, where the castle exterior played the backdrop for the majority of the film. The station features in the film ‘Shaandaar’ as well. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ll recognize the station that was shown as the pick up point of the Hogwarts Express. The rest of it is a non-stop barrage of stereotypes being played for laughs: rich Sindhi men and their love for living life large, grooms obsessed with their eight-and-a-half packs, limp-wrists and fat waists. What’s common between Bollywood film ‘Shaandaar’ and the famous ‘Harry Potter’ films? She has a couple of strong scenes, and wears her weight well. The only one who leaves an impression in this crowded-yet-slack film is Sanah Kapur, the real-life half-sister of Shahid, who plays a bride being used as part of a ‘deal’ between two business families. Shahid and Alia look good together, but there’s not very much else they manage between the two of them. It doesn’t help that he gets into a similar loop with the scenes he has with his real-life `papaji’, and there are several. He can be such a natural charmer, but here the charm offensive is not allowed to stop, and finally just overtakes him. Shahid suffers from a badly-written character. And using her own name so soon in? There’s a problem right there. But here, she’s been made to play so determinedly cute that she sinks into a set of mumbled mannerisms. Underneath it all, she knows she is real, and she can’t help letting us in on her. Costumery and puffery may work with other actors, but it is wrong for Alia. Sequences meant to showcase actual planes, and flights of fancy, but looping no loops.

Songs dressed up and going nowhere, saying nothing. But so much else is so relentlessly piled on– a big fat wedding, no, make that a Big Fat Sindhi Wedding, a grand mansion somewhere in the UK, the standard jibes-at-gay-people, fat girl shaming, sorry stabs at whimsy– that very soon into the film, you are left groaning under the double assault of bling and blather. There’s enough in this premise for it to have turned into a delightful concoction, given that Vikas Bahl’s last was ‘Queen’.
